Benthic Biolayer Structure Controls Whole?Stream Reactive Transport

Hyporheic zone reaction rates are highest just below the sediment-water interface, in a shallow region called benthic biolayer. Vertical variability of hyporheic leads to unexpected kinetics for stream-borne solutes, compared classical model predictions. We show that deeper, low-reactivity locations within retain solutes extended periods, which delays reactions and causes persist at higher concentrations stream reach than would be predicted by approaches. These behaviors captured an upscaled reveals fundamental physical chemical processes zone. how time scales transport biolayer control solute retention transformation scale, we demonstrate accurate assessment stream-scale reactivity requires methods integrate over all travel times.
